Where is Barossa Valley wine region?
Without doubt the most famous of Australia’s wine regions is the Barossa Valley. Something of an institution with Australian wine lovers, the area has a personality all its own.
This character is mainly due to the Barossa’s large German population who began to arrive in 1842. Having sought a new start in a new land, not possible in their homeland, many hundreds of German Lutherans were settled on the huge properties of George Fife Angas. Many of these immigrants had already been involved in viticulture in Germany and soon planted vine cuttings they had brought with them to Australia. Significant amongst these first commercial plantings were those made by Johann Gramp at Rowland Flat, which saw the beginning of the Orlando Company and that of Samuel Smith at Angaston which became Yalumba. The Seppelt family company was established with Joseph Seppelt’s plantings in 1851.
The first wines produced in the Barossa were table wines, but as fortifieds gained in popularity by the turn of the century, winemakers were forced to alter the emphasis of their production. This transition was easy due to the valley’s temperate climate, rich soil and sheltered environment, which enabled new grape varieties, such as Grenache and Pedro to reach production relatively quickly. Over the last ten years however, popular tastes have reverted to premium table wines. As a result, the area under vine in the Barossa is currently less than at its peak, as many vignerons are replanting their vineyards with grapes more suitable for table wine. Companies such as Peter Lehmann, Basedow, St. Hallett, Rockford and others are producing excellent premium table wines and have recently been joined by newcomers on the boutique arena such as Jenke, Burge, Family, Bethany, Twin Valley Estate, Charles Melton, Charles Cimicky, Willows, Turkey Flat, Grant Burge and others. The Barossa Valley is also home to many large companies such as Penfold’s and Kaiser Stuhl, Orlando, Seppelts, Yalumba, Wolf Blass, Tollana, Krondorf and Leo Buring. All these wineries are totally committed to Barossa fruit exclusively and have a full recognition of the Barossa’s solid viticultural base. Many vineyards have been in the same families and worked by them for five-six generations. Click Here to see our exclusive range of Barossa Valley Wine
Many vineyards of shiraz, grenache and semillon have 50 year old vines and some over 100 years old, whilst other regions have changed dramatically viticulturally.
There has also been a renaissance of quality bottled table wines such as Chatcau Yaldara and Rovalley Estate. The growing emphasis on wine tourism has led to the establishment of the likes of Kaesler Wines with its restaurant, conference and seminar facilities and recently completed accommodation.
Others in this ilk are Chateau Dorrien & Vintners.Click Here to see our exclusive range of Barossa Valley Wine
The list goes on, with many fine restaurants and Bed and Breakfast Inns being established during the last decade.
Every two years the Barossa Valley is the setting for a wonderful Vintage Festival. Commencing on Easter Monday, the festival runs for a week and is based around the Tanunda oval. There is a giant fair and all the local wine companies set up marquees for public tastings.
The highlights of this celebration are the huge banquets, held in Tanunda’s enormous hall, consisting of a sit down Barossa feast for 2,000 people at a time. In addition, the Ledertahl Choir and Tanunda Brass Band usually perform to delighted crowds who, by the end of the evening are usually standing on their tables clapping to the music.
The Festival wine auction is also worth attending and must be the best of its kind held in Australia. Click Here to see our exclusive range of Barossa Valley Wine
The Spring Barossa Music Festival features two weeks of outstanding concerts at wineries, the valley’s beautiful churches and other venues. This event is not only of National but International significance and is already a major South Australian Tourism attraction. Another event, the Annual Barossa Classic Gourmet Weekend in August, where most wineries participate and team up with a leading restaurant and provide live entertainment, is hugely successful. This weekend welcomes more than 30,000 happy visitors each year. The Valley also boasts some of the best bakeries and smallgoods makers in Australia. Put a trip to the Barossa on your travel agenda. Until then, why not enjoy some of her fine wines. Click Here to see our exclusive range of Barossa Valley Wine
